About the painting:
Several mourning doves showed up on the deck one cold spring morning. They were fluffing up their feathers in the warmth of the morning sun. This little guy was a young dove, learning to fluff his feathers in the cold. I liked how you could see each of his feathers in the morning sunshine.

I used HB, 4B, 5B, and 8B graphite pencils on creamy white vellum paper. I start with a loose sketch of shapes using reference photos I took of the doves. Then begin to add the details of the feathers and his face. Since the doves are usually on the ground, rather than a deck railing, I added some grass into the drawing for a more realistic look.
